France : housework and care account for 33% of GDP
INSEE published a report measuring and evaluating the value of domestic production.
On the 22nd of November 2012, INSEE (National Institute for Statistics and Economic studies) publishes a report showing that in 2010 a French spent on average three hours per day doing housework and care (cooking, cleaning, shopping, care for children of elderly people). Thus, it is estimated that housework and care done privately come to 60 billion hours annually.
Considering these housework and care as a service production that creates wealth, the report assesses its value. Thus, the value of housework and care on the basis of the gross hourly minimum growth wage (Smic) account for €636 billions, that is 33% of French GDP.
